Interview by Ellen Affah

How did you discover your love for fashion
Well I had been drawing since I was 2 and had the passion for art which grew into my obsession for fashion. I loved being different. I like colours, love prints, love patterns and love designing clothes for different body types. My fashion designing trade in the year 2009. My mum says when I was younger if she wore me a dress similar to my sisters I would either look for my hair ruffles or hair accessories and attach them to the dress just to look different.

What do you find challenging when it comes to your work
What I find challenging some times is electricity and how much I spend on fuel its necessary to have light when your dealing with a product like clothing.

How do you finance your clothing line considering the fact that you are a student
I work extremely hard. I sell my sketches to make some quick cash to put into my business. Fashion entails risks and investments. I Invest some of my pocket money into the business instead on spending it on junk or credit. I sacrifice so that the business is up and running

How do you satisfy your clients
I satisfy my clients with my services. I make it is as stress free as possible the only thing I consider as stress for them is trying on the clothes and making sure it fits. I meet the clients, derive styles that fit their various body types be it a pear shape, apple shape, inverted triangles, round or even hour glass figures etc along side their personalities and insecurities. I make my clients feel really good in their own skin. I design clothes for full figured ladies and also the spidery long legged ladies. I have no flare seggregation.

Your choice of study and do you intend on going into fashion fully after school
I am a student of the university of lagos. A creative art student and a visual major. Fashion is art, art is my genesis. It is in my very gene. Fine art is very much related to fashion based on different levels I.e aesthetic values, appreciation, utilisation etc.

How well do people respond when they know you are a young fashion designer
Well depends on what they are looking for. At first I may get under estimated because am just 20 and young but I always prove them wrong with my designs, fabric choices and finishing the total delivery. Recently, one client I made a dress for introduced quite a number of people that am presently making clothes for which has boosted my confidence and zeal.

What is art to you
Art to me is life. Its a life style, a trend, it is a means of communication, it helps us honour and celebrate our cultures and tradition so does fashion.

Define your style
My style if I may say is distinct because I have art as my background. I love to be comfortable but in a stylish way. My main goal is to have a lot of fun while approaching fashion or styling in general but the first rule of clothing is to cover nakedness which seems to be forgotten this days by several designers. I love daring sexy outfits but still in a modest way.

Projects working on
Am working on a new shop getting a bigger space more crew members probably a sewing training for people that want to learn, collaboration with a wedding planner to make her clients outfits or bridal party, and finally Manoshia ready to wear on a large scale.

A celebrity you would love to dress
I’ll say waje I feel she is beautiful but a few stylist dress her the same way in bulky clothes that do nothing for her beautiful curves

Advice
My advise for teens will be if you love something fight for it. Don’t give up to make anyone happy but your self. Its your life. You will live and eventually die alone, don’t waist your time pleasing people. Do things that make you feel happy and proud of your self. Career wise what comes to you naturally should be your focus for looking for a line of occupation.

A 14-YEAR-OLD girl killed herself after being bullied by vile internet trolls on a notorious social networking site.

Hannah Smith was found dead on Friday after being sent abusive messages on the popular site Ask.fm.

The teen is believed to have hung herself after being taunted on the interest-based question and answer website.

Sickening messages telling the youngster to “drink bleach” and “go get cancer” were left on her profile page, according to other users.

The day before she killed herself, Hannah, from Lutterworth, Leicestershire, posted a picture message on her Facebook page which read: “You think you want to die, but in reality you just want to be saved.”

Her devastated parents posted the heartbreaking news online, with her father Dave Smith writing on his Facebook page: “My heart is broken in 2 and is gonna take a long time to repair I just hope that none of you have to go through the pain I’m going through right now and love u all.

” What is left after hannah took her own life.

Mr Smith, 45, said Hannah’s sister, Jo, is unable to go upstairs by herself since her the tragedy.

He said: “I drink too much thinking it will help it doesn’t.”

“I keep a tissue in my pocket for the next time the tears come.”

“The television hasn’t been on for 3 days cant bear to watch it”

“We have to go for walks regular as we cant bear being in this empty house.”

Ask.fm, which launched in 2010, has been heavily criticised by anti-bullying charities because it allows users to post anonymous comments or questions – often of a sexual or insulting nature – on the pages of children as young as 13.

The notorious social networking website has been described by child safety experts as a ‘stalker’s paradise’.

An online petition has been set-up criticising the site and demanding it to be shut down.

Hannah’s stepmother Deb, 41, posted on it: “We are behind you on getting this vile website shut down………..my beautiful step daughter Hannah Smith tragically took her life this week , we have since found out she was being bullied on Ask.fm. “Rest in peace my baby xxxxxx”

It’s not the first time a teenager has took their own life after being trolled on the website.

Josh Unsworth, 15, from Lancashire, had endured months of abusive messages on his profile and was found hanged in his parent’s garden in April.

Last year, Irish teens Ciara Pugsley, 15, from Leitrim and Erin Gallagher, 13, from Donegal, took their own lives after being subjected to anonymous bullying on the site.

The controversial Latvian-based website has become one of the world~s most popular social networks after its newly released official smart phone app became a huge online hit.

A tribute page has been set-up on social media websites in memory of the tragic teenager, who had an older sister called Jo, and has gained support from more than 4,000 people.

The page described Hannah as a ‘beautiful young girl who everyone loved very much.’

Hannah’s cousin, Matt Hubbard, paid tribute to her and said: “Most energetic and daft girl I’ve ever met it was a pleasure to be your cousin!”

Campaign group Harborough Against bullying Midlands said: “We were saddened today to hear of a girl of only 14 taking her life. She was being bullied. Our heart felt thoughts are with her loved ones at this tragic time.”

The petition says cyber-bullying is an increasing problem in the UK and states: “Cyber-Bullying has been an ever increasing problem within the UK for a considerable amount of time with one of the biggest offenders becoming Ask.Fm, a site popular amongst young people where posts can be made with confidence anonymously which has led to bullying, mental health problems and suicides as well as grooming.
“The problem cannot be allowed to persist and whilst there is public opinion about digital rights please sign if you would like the Government to step in and insist that Ask.fm and similar sites help us protect our young people.

“They are able to join from the age of 13 and can post anonymously. There is no option to block other users and only a basic ‘report’ button.”

Have a fruitful week.

Thank God its AUGUST!

Thank God its August!

This month should be all about thanksgiving to God. Last month I wrote about keep calm and don’t give up. If you missed it, please check here.
Jolly july: Keep calm and dont give up

I have lots of reasons to thank God. Its like counting all my blessings and naming them one by one. Am amazed at what God has done for me.

I would start by thanking Him for my life, for the past months and years, my daily meal (I love food a lot and wonder what would happen to me without it. A cup of garri ijebu and groundnut does wonder to my soul), for His grace, love, mercies, listening ears, promises, strength, inspiration and patience(to put up with someone like me). Every individual has a tale. Search your heart deeply, you would realise there’s a lot to thank Him for.

A songwriter said “praise will confuse the enemies” . When things don’t go as planned, when you are broke, when you are sad, in tears, in pain, in a situation words can’t define, confused and weak, praise Him in advance. Your enemies will definitely be confused, the victory is yours. A thankful heart brings pleasure to God and satan is defeated because thankfulness during difficult times is a sacrifice pleasing to God.

How can you thank God? Call him sweet, wonderful names, sing praises to Him, sing hymns to Him; give Him your dance and clap offering, give Him a thankful heart; share His goodness to people, that’s one of the best ways to show God has been so good to you.

No matter how silly the reason sounds to you and to others, it counts to Him. He deserves it and more.
For the little natural things( excreting, feeding, respirating etc) – Thank Him. Some people have died or are in serious discomfort because they can’t do that.

For waking up everyday – Thank Him. Like the saying goes:”if you think its your alarm clock that wakes you up every morning, try putting it near a corpse.”

For the known and the unknown battles He has fought and the ones He’s yet to fight -Thank Him. Only if God could open your spiritual eyes to see the battles He has fought for you.

For the air you breathe – Thank Him. Have you ever imagined what would happen if the air we breath was packaged like a drip or water and sold? You know how much you would be able to afford.

For forgiving your sins, healing your diseases, for His marvellous creations( nature, animals, birds, insects, plants, trees, etc) – Thank Him!

Only an ingrate would say in his heart, there is nothing to thank God for. Nowadays, you don’t have to go to the hospital to know how to give thanks. Our newspapers, news channels, social media and things happening around us tells alot . Are you still thinking of a reason to thank Him?

Have you heard of the story of a wealthy man who lost his 10 children, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 1,000 herds of cattle and 500 donkeys just in one day? Yes! ONE DAY. And was also inflicted with an incurable disease. What trouble could be worse than that? Yet this man tore his clothes in grief. He shaved his head and threw himself on the floor, with his face buried in the ground he said “I was born with nothing and I will die with nothing. The lord gave, and now has taken away. May His name be praised!” Wonderful!

In this month of August, we are forgetting all our problems. No complain, no grumbling, no worry, no fear. We are leaving all at the Master’s feet and not looking back to check if He picked them up. We are thanking him all the way.

A thankful heart is an healthy heart. It brings contentment and joy. A thankful heart prepares the way for God’s blessings. A Worried and fearful heart is willing to accommodate illness (depression, headache, insomnia, high/low blood pressure etc). So, its pays to be thankful at all time.
May God grant us a cause to remain thankful this month and forever. Amen.
